Brayden Strack and Cliff Strack were recipients of the Lincoln Prairie Conference Principal’s Award. The award recognizes students for their participation and dedication in conference activities and for being outstanding students in their respective high schools. A luncheon was held at Yoder’s Kitchen with all LPC student award winners. Congratulations Brayden and Cliff!
The State Bank of Bement presented a presentation on banking services and using credit wisely to seniors in Mrs. Corum's Consumer Education class. Special thanks to Michelle Gross and her assistant Michael and the bank for sponsoring cash prizes for the winning jeopardy team.
Bement High School Foods students recently participated in a three-day, hands-on lesson focused on understanding the local food system and mastering the art of safely preserving fresh produce.
The program began with an introduction to Clean Acres Farm, a small farm located just six miles south of Bement. The farm’s mission is to provide chemical-free fruits and vegetables for a healthier Piatt County and beyond. Students learned how the small farm contributes to the local foods system and how they incorporate value-added (canned) products to help sustain their farm operation.
On the second day, Caitlin Mellendorf, University of Illinois Extension Nutrition and Wellness Educator, led a hands-on lesson. She discussed various food preservation methods such as freezing, pressure sealing, water-bath canning, drying, and fermenting. This particular session focused on safe water-bath canning of a salsa recipe in the home kitchen. Students learned how to boil tomatoes to remove the skins, how to char peppers and jalapenos in the oven, and then applied their knife skills to dice the tomatoes, hot and sweet peppers, and onion for the recipe.
On the final day, students finished the recipe adding salt, pepper, and vinegar. They then learned how to safely pack and seal their salsa recipes in a jar for long-term storage.
“Learning how to safely preserve vegetables when they are at their peak flavor and nutrition is a valuable and practical lesson our students will be able to use all through adulthood,” commented Angie Corum, Bement High School’s Home Economics Teacher.

Students in FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) visited Naperville for their end of the year field trip. To qualify for the trip, students must earn enough points throughout the year completing various service projects for the school and community. Participants toured North Central College and spent the afternoon trying their hand at Topgolf.
